Things to Consider
This is a region where those who rely on English are disappointed. The Spanish, who host an average of 50 million tourists a year, will continue to answer in Spanish as long as you insist on speaking English. Whether you understand it or not...
My humble advice is to communicate with body language along with a 'Hola' (hello) and a 'Gracias' (thank you). You'll see when you try.

Although life is very active in Spain, you will actually feel a heaviness in almost all of the service sectors. Our time is always valuable, but telling someone to hurry up here will waste your time even more. Forget the practicality you are used to and know as soon as you enter Spanish airspace.

There is no need to use a passport except in exceptional places. I recommend that you do not place any of your personal belongings on the table in cafes and restaurants in big cities like Barcelona, Madrid, Valencia and Seville where there are a lot of tourists.
